EMP Threats On The Horizon!

According to former CIA Director James Woolsey “The most significant threat to the U.S. in the world” is the threat of a electromagnetic pulse, or EMP.

It’s the kind of scenario that the most informed experts in the country – military commanders, scientist and emergency response experts warn about.

China and Russia have considered limited nuclear attack options that include EMP as the primary or sole means of attack.

What is an EMP?

If your a Prepper and don’t know about and EMP “Electromagnet pulse” then this this should be a major concern to you as it is one of the most common threats as a prepper you should be prepared for.

An EMP “Electromagnet pulse” can be caused by solar flares, or a detonated nuclear bomb.

An electromagnetic pulse (EMP), also sometimes called a transient electromagnetic disturbance, is a short burst of electromagnetic energy. Such a pulse may occur in the form of a radiated electric or magnetic field or conducted electrical current depending on the source, and may be natural or man-made. The term “electromagnetic pulse” is commonly abbreviated to the acronym EMP (which is pronounced by saying the letters separately, “E-M-P”).

EMP interference is generally damaging to electronic equipment, and at higher energy levels a powerful EMP event such as a lightning strike can damage physical objects such as buildings and aircraft structures. The management of EMP effects is an important branch of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) engineering.

The damaging effects of high-energy EMP have been used to create EMP weapons. These are typically divided into nuclear and non-nuclear devices.

How can this affect us?

An Electromagnet pulse can shut down our power grid completely for months or even years. It drowns out radio signals, TV signals, cellphones and air defense radar systems.

It would destroy the internet, banking, gas pipeline and power plant safeguards, hospital and emergency response communications, public water and sewage. So literally we would be plummeted back into the dark ages. Most modes of transportation would be affected. If you have ever watched the TV shows Jericho or Revolution then their scenarios would basically be life as we know it. And the beginning of SHTF or TEOTWAWKI.

Breakdowns and aftermath.

The lack of power, transportation, food shipments, water and basic communications would literally shutdown the U.S. and cause widespread panic, riots, looting, murders, rapes and death from dehydration, starvation and disease would become devastating due to lack of clean resources and no sanitation or medical treatment also emergency services would be non existent.  Aircraft would literally free fall from the sky. The U.S. would instantly become a third world country and a disaster zone.


Stockpiling as much food and supplies will help soften the blow for a short period of time, but eventually we will have to revert back to skills most have forgotten or never bothered to learn or took for granted because of modern day conveniences. Growing our own foods, bartering goods and services. Survival will become a daily part of life for those who survive the initial breakdown.

Build a Faraday Cage

A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure formed by conductive material or by a mesh of such material. Such an enclosure blocks external static and non-static electric fields by channeling electricity through the mesh, providing constant voltage on all sides of the enclosure. Since the difference in voltage is the measure of electrical potential, no current flows through the space. Faraday cages are named after the English scientist Michael Faraday, who invented them in 1836.

A Faraday cage operates because an external static electrical field causes the electric charges within the cage’s conducting material to be distributed such that they cancel the field’s effect in the cage’s interior. This phenomenon is used, for example, to protect electronic equipment from lightning strikes and electromagnetic and electrostatic discharges.

A simple Faraday cage can be made from a lined ammo can or galvanized trashcan with lid and a wire screen box. Research online all the different types of cages to see whats best and simplest for you. Protect any electronics you plan to use when the SHTF such as handheld radios, or other communication devices, batteries and chargers to keep them charged using a generator or vehicle that may still be operational. Also solar powered charging devices should be stored inside the cage.
